The Japan international, an all-round defender, made just 13 starts in all competitions in 2022/23. Add to that a conceded goal in a crucial January match against Manchester City, and he had a tough time down the stretch, missing the final two months with injury.
“It was a difficult time for me (last season), especially in the second half, because Ben White (in my position) was doing very well and I lost confidence to be honest,” Tomiyas told The Athletic UK on Saturday. “You have to learn from the injury and the mistakes (I made) against Man City. There are good moments and bad moments, but you learn a lot from the bad ones. Right now, everything is positive in my body and mind.”
Tomiyasu added: “We have players like White, Wirien Timber and Jakub Kivior who can play fullback or center back with me. I just want to be on the pitch. I want to play as much as I can and I want to help the team, it doesn’t matter where I play. I want to be on the pitch to help the team, so the first thing I need to do is prove my worth in training,” he added.
