Kiwoom Heroes blew a six-run lead in the top of the eighth inning and still lost. The runs they gave up early and often were painful.
Kiwoom lost 6-8 in an away game against the Samsung Lions of the 2023 Shinhan Bank SOL KBO League at Samsung Lions Park in Daegu, South Korea, on July 27 at 6 p.m.
Kiwoom right-hander Kim Sun-ki took the loss after throwing 84 pitches in five innings, allowing five runs and eight hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Samsung right-hander Won Tae-in pitched seven scoreless innings to improve to 6-6 on the season.
The game, which was scheduled to be played at 5 p.m., started at 6 p.m. after the field was repaired due to rain.
With the series tied at 1-1, a tight game was expected, but Kiwoom gave up an early run.
After giving up an RBI single to Samsung’s Lee Jae-hyun in the second inning, Kiwoom quickly gave up three runs in the third inning on RBI singles by Kang Min-ho and Oh Jae-il and a sacrifice fly by Pirela to fall behind 0-4.
Kiwoom followed a familiar pattern in the fifth and sixth innings. After giving up a run in the fifth on a Pirela single, Kiwoom gave up another three runs in the sixth on RBI singles by Kim Ji-chan and Koo Ja-uk and a throwing error by shortstop Kim Hwijip. After giving up eight runs in six innings, Kiwoom pushed across six runs in the top of the eighth, including a three-run homer by Lee Ju-hyung, but failed to make any further inroads. The steady stream of early runs proved to be their undoing.
